Dogs at the BBQ: What They Can Eat, What They Shouldn't, and How Hank Keeps Trying Anyway

Dogs at the BBQ: What They Can Eat, What They Shouldn't, and How Hank Keeps Trying Anyway

There's something special about a backyard BBQ. The grill is fired up, family and friends are gathered around, kids are playing in the yard, and - if you're like me - there's a beagle named Hank quietly plotting his next snack.

Actually, "quietly" might not be the right word.

Hank has somehow convinced himself that every BBQ is held in his honor. He patrols beneath lawn chairs like a furry vacuum cleaner, strategically positions himself near the grill, and has perfected what I call The Look—those big brown eyes that say, "Surely that burger was made for me."

I tell people, "I'm trying to win Hank's love."

Hank just thinks, "I'm trying to win another hot dog."

Fortunately for both of us, there are a few backyard favorites that are perfectly fine to share—and a few that should never make it into your pup's bowl.

BBQ Foods to Keep Away from Your Dog

While those puppy-dog eyes are hard to resist, some cookout favorites can cause serious health problems.

Onions & Garlic

Whether they're mixed into burgers, potato salad, or baked beans, large amounts of onions and garlic can damage a dog's red blood cells and should be avoided.

Corn on the Cob

The corn itself is generally okay, but the cob can become a dangerous choking hazard or intestinal blockage.

Grapes & Raisins

Found in fruit salads and snacks, in high doses these can be toxic to dogs, but even small amounts aren't going to feel great.

Chocolate Desserts

Brownies, cookies, and chocolate cake are delicious for people but definitely not for dogs. keep these all to yourself!

Alcohol

It might seem obvious, but unattended drinks are surprisingly tempting to curious pups.

Fatty Meats & Bones

Fatty trimmings can upset your dog's stomach, and cooked bones can splinter and cause serious injuries. Best to keep them away.

Foods It's Okay to Share (In Moderation)

There is some good news! Your dog doesn't have to feel completely left out.

Plain Grilled Chicken

Just leave off the seasoning and sauces.

Lean Hamburger

A few bites of plain, cooked beef make a great treat.

Watermelon (Seedless)

A refreshing summer snack.

Carrot Sticks

Crunchy, healthy, and dogs usually love them.

Blueberries

Tiny, sweet, and full of antioxidants.

Green Beans

Fresh or steamed make an easy, guilt-free snack.

And yes... Hank will receive exactly the right amount to convince him I can be one of his favorite humans.

The jury is still out on whether it's working.

Don't Forget the Party Can Be Stressful, Too

While we humans are enjoying burgers, lawn games, and catching up with friends, BBQs can feel very different to our dogs.

New people.

Kids running everywhere.

Music.

Loud conversations.

Maybe even fireworks later that evening.

Some dogs thrive on the excitement, while others become anxious or overwhelmed.

That's why we like to prepare ahead of time.

Twist + Lick® Calming Gel is an easy-to-use gel that simply twists and lets your dog lick it right from the top. It's a convenient way to help support calm behavior during stressful events like parties, holiday celebrations, travel, and fireworks. It works faster and lasts longer so your dog can spend more time enjoying the day with the family.

Because the best BBQ memories include everyone... especially the four-legged family members.

Make This Summer One to Remember

At Tevra Pet, we believe our pets belong right in the middle of life's best moments—lounging under the picnic table, hoping for a tiny piece of grilled chicken, or happily snoozing while everyone enjoys the sunshine.

So this summer, fire up the grill, make memories with family, sneak your pup a healthy treat (don't worry, we won't tell), and remember that a little preparation goes a long way toward making every backyard gathering enjoyable for everyone.

Even Hank.

Although... if you ask him, I still owe him that entire cheeseburger.
