Hi everyone. I hope you are enjoying following my fun adventures. Today I want to get serious about something near and dear to my heart. Flea and tick season for most of the country is upon us. It differs from state to state, and in some states, it is all year long. Fleas and ticks are nasty little creatures. Not only do they look gross, they can carry some icky diseases. Fleas can make us pets itchy and uncomfortable. Ticks suck our blood. If that doesn’t gross you out, wait until you hear about what they can transmit while they are sucking our blood. These gross little creatures can carry Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Ehrlichiosis, Anaplasmosis, Haemobartonellosis, and some other diseases with long words. I don’t know what they are, but they sound scary and I wouldn’t want them.
Now, when it comes to protecting your pet from these ugly things, you do have options. You can use a topical treatment, which is applied to your pet’s skin. There is also an oral option. Let’s talk about the differences really quick. First off, I don’t know about your pets, but I don’t like taking pills, even if they do look or taste like yummy treats! The biggest difference between oral and topical treatments is that the topical treatment not only kills fleas and ticks, it keeps them from biting me in the first place. With an oral treatment, it may kill the fleas and ticks I already have (if I had any), but it doesn’t prevent them from biting me. In other words, a flea or tick would still be able to bite me and THEN it would die. No thank you! I would prefer not having anything bite me.
Tevra Brands offers some great topical flea and tick products. Tevrapet offers Activate II and Vetality offers Avantect II. Both products contain Imidacloprid, Permethrin, and Pyriproxyfen. These may not mean much to you, but they are also found in K9 Advantix II for dogs. It repels and kills fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, flea eggs, kills lice, and like I said, repels biting fleas. The best thing about this product is that it is a fraction of the cost of the other brand. There is another product offered by both brands. Tevrapet has FirstAct Plus and Vetality has FirsTect Plus. These both contain the same active ingredients that are in Frontline Plus. They kill fleas, ticks, flea eggs and larvae, and chewing lice. Again, they are a fraction of the price of the other brands. This is a win, win situation. You can protect your pets and save money!
